Paul Barclay
There seems to be no power on earth that will stand in the way of ultimate success for Paul Barclay. After releasing his first chart toping single ‘NO Power on Earth’ by George Nooks, under his KatsJam Records label, Barclay is now being recognised as one of Jamaica’s brightest songwriters, producer and publisher. Jamaican ‘to the bone’, Paul’s dedication and commitment to the upliftment of the human spirit through the language and consciousness of reggae music, is highlighted in the very approach he took in ensuring that his first major musical project had the ability to leave an indelible mark on the minds of many.
Paul gleaned much of his experience and exposure from years of being the musical director/band leader for world renowned talents like, Grace Thrillers, Carlene Davis, Papa San and Judy Mowatt among others. Ready to explore the world of music and to heighten the consciousness of many through the language and dynamism of reggae music, Paul drew his inspiration from his love of chemistry during his high school days. One word seemed to have left an indelible mark on his mind – Catalyst – that which has the ability to instigate change without itself being transformed. With this inspiration, the Katalys Crew became the next major project embarked upon by Paul.
The Katalys Crew is is a Reggae group dubbed by industry insiders as the Number One Roots Inspirational Gospel Band in Jamaica and possibly the Caribbean. The group has released three CDs, Open Your Eyes in 2004, Christmas Inna Jamdown in 2005 and the latest realease, 4 A Reason in 2008 which was produced by Katsjam Records.
From 2002 to 2005, Paul, with the assistance of the the Katalys Crew members and management team, was successfully responsible for all the live music for the entire Gospel Festival series. An annual event run by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), the Gospel Festival series included the Kiddies Festivals and the grand finals for three consecutive years.
One of the bright stars among upcoming producers in Jamaica, Paul was the Co Producer for the winning song in the popular festival competition in 2003. In 2004 Paul again held the coveted title as Producer and Co Producer for the winning songs in both the JCDC’s Gospel Festival and Popular Song Competitions respectively. This is the only such achievement by any producer in the history of the competition.
As if that achievement was not enough, Paul in 2005 and 2007 again captured the coveted producer of the winning song in the gospel festival competition. In 2008 Can't Stop Now got the award for Best Gospel Song in the first staging of the Reggae Academy Awards. This song can be found on the latest Katalys Crew CD produced by Paul.
Among his many achievements, Paul is a past member of the board at The Record Industry Association of Jamaica, and a current member of the board of directors at JACAP (Jamaica Association of Composers Authors and Publishers). Paul is also a former member of the steering committee for gospel at the JCDC and holds a diploma in Entertainment Management.
